S.C. Forestry Commissioner Gene Kodama (right) and Coastal S.C. Chapter, American Red Cross CEO Angela Nicholas talk with an Horry County resident who is one of 76 families to lose their homes to a wildfire in April 2009. Kodama was in Myrtle Beach May 28 for a joint event with Red Cross to offer a 56-page color booklet “Highway 31 Fire Special Edition” to the public for a $5 minimum donation to the local chapter of the Red Cross. The booklet, created by Michelle Johnson, public information coordinator for the S.C. Forestry Commission, includes color photos and stories about the wildfire that began April 22 as a 2-acre wildfire and spread to more than 19,000 acres. The wildfire claimed 76 homes, damaged 100 others and brought $50 million in damages to the area. It was brought under control on May 20, 2009. |
